Information on Wood Canopy Bed

The wood canopy bed is one of the decorative beds and it is very much similar to that of four-poster bed. Typically, these beds features posts on each of the four corners that extend up to four feet in height or it will be four feet high above the mattresses. Decorative or ornate fabric is draped across the upper space between both the solid swaths and posts of cloth and it will create ceiling or the canopy directly over the bed.

This bed came in to existence just for the utilitarian ways rather than for the decadence and extravagance. In fact, most of the earliest incarnations were perhaps the beds of common people seeking the additional layer of the shelter just beyond that of the less then impenetrable thatched roof. These type of canopy beds in the medieval period that could enclose the bed were mostly used by noblemen and lord in Europe for both warmth and privacy, as their attendants would sleep in the same room where the lords used to sleep.

Until the 16th century, these beds were plain and were understated. Throughout this period, the carved work on posts and headboards became too popular and the ornate beds followed the trend.

The canopy beds that are available currently fit into both the categories of contemporary or traditional. Almost all the traditional beds have the Victorian aesthetics along with the carved wood frames or along with the metal rod frames. These beds sometimes featured pleated, ruffled elaborate draping and sometimes with heavy cloth. In contrast with the traditional canopy beds, the contemporary beds employ simpler and cleaner designs. Metal is used in the modern wood canopy beds and it gives an impressive look to the bed. The modern beds do not contain harder designs.
