How to Make a Perfect Bed

December 21st, 2010 4 Poster Bed Expert Posted in Articles No Comments »

Beds are of Many Types. But do you know How to make them Comfortable & Perfect for sleeping? There are Beds, then come the Mattress, then Mattress Protectors, Flat Sheets, Bedspreads- But First things First!

Let us start with Beds. Wooden Beds & Metal Beds:
Wooden Beds:
1. Four Poster Bed
2. Wooden Bed with a High Headboard & High Footboard (or Footboard higher than the mattress height) also known as ‘Sleigh Bed’ in the Classic Form.
3. Bed with a Headboard but no footboard & without storage.

Bed with storage underneath; sometimes also called ‘Captain’s Bed’.
4. Modern, Minimalist Platform Bed.

Metal Beds:

1. Four Poster Metal Beds.
2. Metal Bed with a High Headboard & High Footboard.
3. Normal Modern Bed with or without Headboard but without Footboard.

With a 12″or 16″ metal frame Under a Single Mattress

With approx. 4″ metal frame Under Two 8″ thick Mattresses, the lower one containing the springs. Both Basic Types of Beds have similar overall construction. Almost all Beds are variations of these Types with some Extras added as Finishes.

Other than the bed with 2 mattresses (bottom one having the springs) on 4″ Metal Frame, all others have a Single mattress over a Base/ Frame. The Mattress gets its share of rough treatment during its Lifetime! You can prolong its Life by treating it Right & with Care!

After getting slept on for Days & Months the mattress gets pressed at the same spots daily & loses its shape after only a few months.

Tip: To prevent the mattress from going out of shape you should Rotate & / or Flip the mattress every 3 to 6 Months. [You could write the names of 3different Months on each corner of the mattress.(Jan, Feb, Mar on one-Apr, May, Jun on the other, etc.) On those particular months that corner should be on top left, for example.]

We Protect our furniture by giving it a coat of Varnish / Polish in different forms. Similarly you should Protect your mattress top with a Mattress Protector.

A Mattress Protector is a removable bedding item that lies on top of or acts as a mattress cover to provide protection to the mattress. Some mattress protectors also provide protection to the individual sleeping on the mattress from allergens like Bed bugs, dust mites as well as dead skin (dandruff).

A very lightly Quilted Fitted Sheet is the simplest form of a mattress protector. Fitted bed sheet normally has its four corners fitted with elastic & is used as bottom sheet over the mattress. The purpose of a fitted bottom sheet is to keep it from slipping off the mattress while the bed is in use. Fitted Sheet though is not waterproof & cannot protect the mattress from Liquid spills / urine stains, etc. For that Waterproof mattress protectors are used.

They can be like ones used for Baby beds with felt top & Rubberized back or made in totally waterproof material & fit the mattress like a shower cap. Another type of mattress protector is the ‘Flat Sheet or the ‘Bed Sheet’ as we know it normally. This is a piece of sheet of high quality (high thread count) cloth {usually white}, which is larger in size than the mattress, so that it can be tucked around & under the mattress.

Many a times both these sheets-Fitted sheet & Flat sheet -are used together (specially in hotels), Flat sheet on top of Fitted sheet for better mattress protection & comfort.

On top of Flat sheet comes Bedspread.

Bedspread is a bed cover with sides that go to the floor.

A Bedspread can be a Printed / Woven sheet of fabric or can be a bed cover Quilted with cotton / polyester batting (wadding). Cotton, Silk, Chenille, Polyester, satin, Denim, Jute, Linen, etc. all these kind of fabrics are used to make Bedspreads; either as single sheets or quilted bed covers. Bedspreads can be of many styles, such as with Bed skirt / without Bed skirt / with Reverse pleat at corners / fitted with Piping on edges, etc. There are Two simple & Basic ways that Bedspreads can be arranged on top of the mattress.

1.First is Where a Bedspread is spread over the Flat sheet & the sleeping pillows, Euro shams, throw cushions, neck-roll, boudoir cushions, etc. either all of these together or only a few of these cushion accessories are arranged on top towards the Headboard side.

2.Second type is where the Sleeping Pillows are the First ones to go over the Flat sheet / Bed sheet, over which a longer Bedspread is put in such a way that the Bedspread gets partially tucked under the Sleeping pillows before continuing down the bed towards the foot of the bed.

These Sleeping Pillows can be one per person or two per person (two tiered) depending on individual choice or comfort.

In case of two tiered pillows the Bedspread is partially tucked under each tier for neater look.

In some cases the Bedspread set comes with a Bed Skirt or Bed Ruffle, which is a decorative piece, used to cover the box spring and legs of the bed. It fits between the mattress and box spring and hangs to the floor.

A bed with a Bed skirt & a beautifully quilted Bedspread & matching cushion accessories looks extremely elegant.

In these days of Minimalism / post Minimalism people prefer Less Cluttered Look!

Even the beds are less fussy, with straight lines, no carvings or ornamentation but with a combination of different Textures. Platform Beds, which are low lying (usually bigger than the mattress from 3 sides), & cantilevered with Japanese ‘Zen’ style influence are in vogue!

In keeping with the Minimalist Style the Bedspreads are usually tucked around the mattress showing the ‘platform’ of the bed. Bedspreads & Pillows are also normally white or monochromatic without any prominent design on it. Even the quilting on the Bedspreads is simple like straight lines.

Now, with so much simplicity & less or no color does the bed look like a Plain Jane? No, because normally in this condition a Bed Runner set comes into action!

A Bed Runner set usually consists of a pair of Boudoir Pillows (Small rectangular decorative throw pillows also known as Breakfast Pillows)in a contrasting color but complimenting the theme & Bed Runner -a strip of the same Beautifully & heavily worked / woven fabric about 18″to 24″ wide including a matching fabric border band & about 24″ to 30″ longer than the width of the mattress; so that it hangs about 12″ to 15″ on either side of the bed.

As the Bed Runner is kept hanging on two sides of the bed, it should have an excellent Fall to be effective! A Bed Runner is either quilted or kept plain with a matching backing fabric depending upon the fall of its fabric. A Bed Runner is the modern equivalent of the heavily quilted Bedspreads of the highly indulgent times!

The Perfect Bed!

Since Designing in general & Interior Designing specifically is a subjective field-by no means this can be the only way to make a bed! This is normally how the bed is made in the Hospitality Industry (Hotels) & since Appearance, Presentation & Comfort are the main criteria there, I thought this was the Right Example to follow for making The Perfect Bed!

Bedroom Furniture – Caring For Your Bed

December 18th, 2010 4 Poster Bed Expert Posted in Articles No Comments »

Your bed can take care of you while you sleep, but how it does largely depends on how you take care of it while you’re awake. As long as you give it the attention it deserves, it should continue to serve you like the king or queen you are while you’re on it.

Caring for your bed is quite a simple task, but it has to begin from the time it lands in your home. The first you’ll want to look into is the guide that it comes with. Read everything the manufacturer has written in that guide because no matter how basic the instructions may sound, they can make a lot of difference the moment you take them for granted. One thing you shouldn’t miss doing upon removing the packaging of the bed is letting the thing breathe for a few hours before putting a mattress and beddings on it. While your bed may feel a little weird as you try to adjust to its new feel under your back, you should get the hang of it in no time.

No bed frame of superb craftsmanship will make up for a mattress that doesn’t feel good so make sure yours is a pleasure having. Give it time to air by removing your beddings each morning while keeping it away from direct heat. Use only a soft brush for dusting, never a vacuum cleaner. Remove stains by wiping them off gently with a soft fabric but never with detergents as this could cause damage to the material. You can preserve the quality of the mattress’ spring system by avoiding sitting on the edges too long. And don’t forget to turn it as often as the manufacturer recommends. While a mattress could come with a “no-turn needed” tag, it should still be a good idea to rotate its position every now and then.

When it comes to caring for your bed, pillows are always included. Plumping them regularly will help to keep them soft and cushy for longer. Although an average pillow’s comfortable life can go up to three years, they can last even longer when you care for them better.

Keeping your bed’s frame safe and secure is another way of caring for it, so ensure that all bolts, screws, legs and castors are tight in place. If you’re using bed furniture with drawers, don’t overload them as this could cause the drawers to detach or collapse.

Types and Advantages of Kids Trundle Beds

December 14th, 2010 4 Poster Bed Expert Posted in Articles No Comments »

Kids are really very playful and they often organize slumber parties or fun sleepovers. But if their bedrooms are not large enough to accommodate several other kids, then, they will be the perfect solution. The kids’ trundle beds are very efficient and convenient. They do not take a lot of space in a room. In fact, most of the trundle bed types are very easy to maintain. In addition, they are comfortable and they are very sturdy. Most of them are made of resilient metal, wood, and other durable materials. That is why kids who like to jump on their beds will not get hurt if they try to play on these beds.

Such kids’ trundle beds are available in three well known types. The first one is the pull-out type. It is a single piece and may be stored under the upper mattress. It may be pulled out whenever needed. The second one is the pop-up type. This bed lets its user assemble one large bed by elevating the second mattress to the height of the upper mattress. This is possible because the second mattress is usually fastened to springs so it can pop up to the level of the main mattress. Then, the third one is the lift-up type. It is less expensive than the two previous types.

However, storing and setting it up are quite laborious. This type has bendable legs so it can provide more support to the lower mattress. This lower mattress is typically pulled out and raised to reach the height of the upper mattress. This is done to create a bigger single bed. Most of them are readily assembled for immediate purchase but there are also available kits for the do-it-yourselfers. And because of the kids’ trundle beds, kids will have more bedroom space. They will be able to play better and run around without bumping into anything. Additionally, such trundle beds are very practical because most of them also contain drawers for additional storage.

Bedroom Furniture

December 12th, 2010 4 Poster Bed Expert Posted in Articles No Comments »

When purchasing bedroom furniture, people look for comfort first rather than beauty. Most people spend an equal amount of money buying furniture for their bedrooms, as they do for their living rooms.

You should choose furniture for your bedroom that is functional and durable. Do not overcrowd the room, or it will have a claustrophobic feel. The basic furniture that a bedroom should contain is a bed, a pair of chairs, night stands and book shelves. A bed can be built with storage space or can be made to order with shelves. Some beds come with mirrored bed heads. A bed that uses space to a good purpose is a 4-poster bed. Brass beds are also available with brass bed heads.

If you add accessories like wicker tables and couches, you can break the monotony of the room. And, if you’re watching your budget, you can use folding tray tables for bedside tables.

When buying for a child, think versatility and longevity. Buy a set that will grow with your child in a wood that is durable and attractive. Any fabrics should be stain resistant to withstand childish pranks. Vivid colors and robust style are best for a child’s room.

An adolescent’s bedroom normally contains a single bed or bunk bed, work table, book shelves, a study table and a chair. Bunk beds are ideal for children sharing a room. Bright colors on the bunk beds will enhance the room.

A welcome addition to any bedroom is the wardrobe closet. If they are built well, they do not appear bulky and are functional and durable serving as an additional closet in the room. Your bedroom should look comfortable and spacious with furniture that is functional and comfortable, because ultimately, what matters is how you feel in your personal space — your bedroom.

How Four Poster Beds Evolved Into a Luxurious Item

December 11th, 2010 4 Poster Bed Expert Posted in Articles No Comments »

Beds are the soul of a bedroom. They are indeed the centrepiece that can make or break the look of your whole bedroom. A bedroom is incomplete and looks lost and soulless without a good, elegant and beautiful bed piece. While deciding the look for your bedroom, it is extremely important to choose the right frame type and size for perfect and impressive styling of the room. While choosing the best bed for your room, you need to keep three key factors in mind: the space available, existing furniture and the aesthetics. Now days, royal and ethnic theme is a hot favourite amongst many people. To attain this look a traditional looking and imposing single four poster bed is the best option.

Four poster beds, also known as Canopy beds, have found a special place in the cozy and luxurious houses in the United Kingdom and USA. These beds were considered a privilege and a luxury item for the rich and affluent. However, now these are within the reach of the common man who wants to pursue these luxurious, though affordable, pursuits. You can get them easily from various furniture manufacturers, showrooms or online. They are available in various sizes, designs and woods to suit the different requirements of people, like space available, budget, etc.

These luxurious and ultra comfortable single four poster beds have interesting history of their evolution. These were evolved due to the various difficulties faced by people in the olden times. There are many different versions of their evolution. Thus, their following story of evolution also highlights their beneficial characteristics and functions:

- Protection-from stinging insects and mosquitoes: in the middle age, people used to build thatched roofs, which provided little or no protection from the stinging, and often poisonous and fatal attacks, of insects like mosquitoes, caterpillars, mice, snakes, lizards, etc. Especially during the monsoons, these insects used to fall on the sleeping people and attack them. To prevent and reduce such nasty events people started erecting four posters on each corners of their beds and cover these with a cloth, usually a sheet. Thus, what today is considered as a luxurious piece of furniture or an ostentatious furniture pieces adorning the rooms of the affluent, was a practical invention born out of necessity in those times.

- Provided Privacy: The affluent rich of the earlier times have a different tale to tell. In those times, everyone from the rich landlord, his family and servants used to sleep together in big room. Thus, these single four poster beds used to provide the much needed privacy to the couples.

Now, however, all houses have separate bedrooms for everyone, these beds have become style statements. In those times these were a mere practical solution or a necessity and were normally made at homes, or were available in rugged forms.

A triple bunk bed is normally made from solid hardwood materials for better stability and durability. It is best for use by small children sharing a single bedroom as well as college students living away from home in dormitories.

Aside from giving you options to save space, some models can also be separated into three individual twin beds when the need arises

Four Poster Beds – Add Elegance to Your Bedroom

November 19th, 2010 4 Poster Bed Expert Posted in Articles No Comments »

If you are looking to bring more glamour into your bedroom, then do so with a new bed. A bed is the most important piece of bedroom furniture; it is the first thing that one sees upon entering the bedroom and it is also what defines the other furniture which is to be placed in the room. Everybody has their own individual style and this is reflected in the way one designs the bedroom. Some people like a sleek yet minimalist look which can be achieved by the contemporary furniture readily available these days. Others like their bedroom to spell elegance; they want the feel of luxury in the comfort of their homes. Heritage furniture can achieve that look with ease, and this is the reason for the popularity of four poster beds.

Four Poster Beds- Timeless Luxury

A poster bed increases the glamour quotient of the bedroom by its mere presence. It lends an elegant and luxurious look to the room. As grand as the bed is, it commands that the other pieces of furniture match its grandeur in design. A four poster bed is made from wood which is carved in a traditional way similar to how it was done in ancient times, while the frame used for the bed has a more modern feel to it. The frame is like a canopy overhead, and while it was used to hang drapes and net in the earlier times, modern canopy beds can be decorated in many ways. While curtains lend an authentic look to the bed, the canopy can be fixed with lights too. The antique look of such type of bed is attributed to the design of the post which was turned, twisted or fluted. These were the traditional designs of an eighteenth century bed. Further, the sides of the bed were carved in beautiful designs. The poster beds of today, however, have retained the same style- the modern beds have the four posts and canopy; however, they are no longer as ornate as they used to be.

Create Your Own Poster Bed

While buying an antique original poster bed is not everybody’s cup of tea, one can create a poster bed and personalize it according to one’s needs and sensibilities. Starting from the timber one wishes to use for the bed, to the panel design, carving and also the colour of the drapes, it is possible to own this piece of luxury, in a made to order fashion. It enhances the look of a bedroom and is a majestic centrepiece of the room. Elegance is the word that defines these beds; no wonder, it is everybody’s dream to own one.
